| The
System 800A reference monitor uses Tannoy's 8" Dual Concentric™
drive units matched to two 90 Watt RMS amplifiers and electronic crossover.
Unlike passive crossovers, the electronic crossover uses low-level
precision components and is positioned before the amplifier in the signal
path. This allows for more precise amplifier and drive unit control and
improved efficiencies, as the output characteristics of the amplifier can
be designed to suite the specific requirements of the drive unit voice
coils. Since there is a separate bass and treble amplifier, they do not
have to be full audio bandwidth, freeing the designer to focus on sonic
quality and specific component characteristics. One of the little known
features of the Dual Concentric™ drive unit is that it generates a flat
power response. Remember looking for "the sweet spot" in
conventional two or three way monitors? This sweet spot exists because
conventional systems are designed to have a flat response when the
listener is on-axis. If you move off-axis energy is lost at the crossover
point. Reduced amounts of total energy are therefore generated by
conventional multi-way monitor systems, as well as their sonic performance
being degraded off-axis. The Dual Concentric™ design avoids these
deficiencies through constant directivity, producing a far more stable and
natural sound field. With the System 800A, the mix engineer has an
incredibly powerful tool at their disposal.
